Lincoln Town Car Trim Level Breakdown — Executive, Signature, Signature Limited & Signature L (2003–2011)
The 2003–2011 Lincoln Town Car is one of the more confusing vehicles to research by trim level because the naming changed multiple times across the production run — what a "Signature" was in 2003 is not what a "Signature" was in 2006, and trim names that sound equivalent across years often represent entirely different equipment levels. The Executive disappeared from retail sales after 2003 and became fleet-only. The Cartier was replaced by the Ultimate in 2004, which was then replaced by the Signature Limited in 2005. A Designer Series appeared for 2006 and 2007, then was folded into the Signature Limited name. By 2008, the lineup had stabilized into Signature Limited and Signature L for retail customers, with Executive reserved for fleet and livery. This post documents every trim name used across the 2003–2011 run, what each one included, how the naming changed year by year, and what the mechanical differences are between a standard wheelbase and the extended-wheelbase L variants. If you own a Town Car and can't work out what spec you have, the VIN decode and door jamb label guide at the end will get you there.

Trim Name History — The Full Timeline of Name Changes
This is the source of most of the confusion. Lincoln changed the trim nomenclature three times between 2003 and 2011. The same feature set could be called different things depending on the year, and the same name could represent different equipment across different years. The table below maps every trim name to every year it was used, so you can find your vehicle's model year and identify what naming convention applies to it before using any of the feature data in this post.
| Year | Entry / Fleet Level | Mid Level | Upper Mid Level | Top Retail Level | Extended Wheelbase |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2003 | Executive | Signature | — | Cartier | Cartier L |
| 2004 | Executive (fleet only) | Signature | — | Ultimate | Ultimate L |

The Trim Levels Explained — What Each Name Actually Means
Executive (2003 retail; 2004–2011 fleet/livery only) — The base configuration. In 2003, this was a retail model. From 2004 forward, it was available only to commercial buyers — livery operators, taxi fleets, funeral homes, and hotels. The Executive omits most of the luxury-focused interior features: no heated seats, no seat memory, no wood steering wheel trim, no auto-exit seat function, no full-power trunk motor, no HID headlamp option. It has traction control, power windows, power locks, dual-zone climate, and the standard audio system. On the mechanical side, Executive and retail trims share the same drivetrain, suspension, and engine — the differences are entirely interior equipment and available options.
Signature (2003 mid-level; 2004–2008 entry-level retail) — After 2003, the Signature became the entry-level retail trim, representing about the same equipment level as the 2003 Executive. In 2003 specifically, the Signature was the mid-tier with heated front seats, memory seating, and wood steering wheel trim. The quick identification test from the community: if the car has a wood-trimmed steering wheel, it's at Signature level or above for 2005 and later. If it has a plain steering wheel, it's base-level for that year.
Signature Limited (2005–2011) — The mid-to-upper retail trim from 2005 onward, and the only retail trim available in standard wheelbase from 2009–2011. Adds wood-and-leather steering wheel with integrated audio and climate controls, premium Audiophile sound system (150W, 8 speakers plus subwoofer), full-power trunk lid with remote open/close, heated front seats with memory, color-keyed heated mirrors with auto-dimming driver's side, machined 10-spoke aluminum wheels, and power-adjustable pedals with memory. The Signature Limited is the trim level most commonly encountered on 2008–2011 retail Town Cars because it was the only standard-wheelbase option available in those final years.
Signature L (2003–2011) — The extended-wheelbase version, adding 6 inches to the wheelbase and rear door for substantially increased rear passenger legroom. Available across the entire production run under different leading trim names (Cartier L in 2003, Ultimate L in 2004, Signature L from 2005 forward). The L always represents the top-tier in terms of rear passenger accommodation — it is designed specifically for chauffeured use. Rear passengers get dedicated climate and audio controls. The extended rear door panel has fixed opera windows (wider on 2003+). The L is mechanically identical to the standard wheelbase except for the longer body structure, modified rear door, and additional rear electrical provisions.
Designer Series (2006–2008) — A trim level added between the Signature Limited and Signature L for 2006 and 2007, then carried through 2008. Functionally equivalent to the top-tier retail features in standard wheelbase — unique exterior and interior styling elements including distinctive badging, specific color and trim combinations, and in some cases upgraded wheel designs. Not a separate mechanical specification — the Designer Series shares the same drivetrain and feature set as the Signature Limited with additional aesthetic differentiation.
Standard Wheelbase vs. Signature L — Dimensions and Differences
The L designation is a wheelbase extension, not a separate trim level on its own — it is always applied on top of the highest available retail trim for a given year. The 6-inch extension is added entirely in the rear door section, pushing the C-pillar rearward and creating the extended rear door with its characteristic wide opera window. The front of the car, the engine bay, the dashboard, and the front seat area are identical between standard and L wheelbase vehicles.
| Dimension | Standard Wheelbase (SWB) | Extended Wheelbase — L (LWB) |
|---|---|---|
| Wheelbase | 117.7 in (2,990 mm) | 123.7 in (3,142 mm) — 6 inches longer |
| Overall length | 215.4 in (5,471 mm) | 221.5 in (5,624 mm) — 6 inches longer |
| Overall width | 78.5 in (1,994 mm) | 78.5 in (1,994 mm) — same |
| Height | 59.0 in (1,499 mm) | 59.1 in (1,501 mm) — essentially same |
| Rear legroom | 39.6 in (1,006 mm) | 45.4 in (1,153 mm) — approximately 5.9 inches more |
| Curb weight | ~4,344 lbs (1,971 kg) | ~4,517 lbs (2,049 kg) — approximately 173 lbs heavier |
| Cargo volume | 23.6 cu ft (668 L) — varies slightly by year | Same trunk opening — additional length is in the cabin, not the trunk |
| Rear door | Standard rear door | Extended rear door with wide fixed opera window — visually distinctive |
| Rear audio/climate | Not standard — rear climate vents present but no dedicated controls | Separate rear passenger audio and climate controls — standard on all L models |
| Rear power points | Not present (pre-2005 fuse positions show LWB-only rear power points) | Right and left rear power points (fuses #6 and #12 in 2003–2004 BJB); cigar lighter ports in rear doors |

Year-by-Year Changes and Trim Notes (2003–2011)
| Year | Notable Changes and Trim-Specific Notes |
|---|---|
| 2003 | Major platform redesign — new hydroformed frame, revised suspension, rack-and-pinion steering (replaces recirculating ball), 17-inch wheels standard (up from 16-inch). Hood ornament reintroduced. New instrument panel with tachometer and speedometer as primary gauges. Dual exhaust now standard on all trim levels — this is a 14 hp increase over the 2002 single-exhaust V8 (225 hp → 239 hp). Mid-year: "The Limited" special edition produced in 1,131 units based on the Signature trim with perforated seats, unique wheels, and Mineral Green Metallic color option. THX audio with 6.5-inch navigation touchscreen available on Cartier. Ultrasonic park assist standard on Signature and Cartier; not available on Executive. |
| 2004 | Trim names reshuffled — Executive becomes fleet-only, Signature replaces it at retail base, Ultimate replaces Cartier at the top. Feature content within each tier remains similar to 2003 equivalents. Cartier L becomes Ultimate L. No mechanical changes to the drivetrain. The trim rename without feature change is the primary source of year-to-year comparison confusion. |
| 2005 | ETC (Electronic Throttle Control / drive-by-wire) introduced — all 2005+ Town Cars use the drive-by-wire throttle system, eliminating the mechanical cable. 4R75E replaces 4R75W. New two-spoke steering wheel design across the lineup. Ultimate trim dropped — replaced by Signature Limited. Three-tier retail lineup established: Signature, Signature Limited, Signature L. Executive L (LWB fleet) added. THX-certified audio available. Rear audio and climate controls standard on Signature L. Ultrasonic park assist now standard on all retail trims. |
| 2006 | Designer Series trim added between Signature Limited and Signature L. No major mechanical changes. The Designer Series brings unique exterior color and interior trim combinations with Signature Limited features as the baseline. Rear parking sensors standard on all retail models. |
| 2007 | Signature Limited upgrade list documented in community sources: full-power trunk, heated auto-dimming mirrors with memory, Audiophile dual-media stereo (150W, SIRIUS-capable), premium heated front seats with easy-entry/exit, embroidered floor mats, wood/leather steering wheel with integrated controls, power-adjustable pedals with memory. No major mechanical changes. Continental Edition limited package available on Signature Limited. |
| 2008 | Base Signature trim deleted from retail — Signature Limited becomes the standard retail purchase in SWB. Over 50% of exterior color options discontinued to simplify the palette. Executive L (LWB fleet version) more formally documented. Quad-beam halogen headlamps standard; HID optional on Signature Limited and Designer Series. Broad shield-style chromed grille redesign. All trims receive stand-up Lincoln hood ornament. Mercon LV fluid now mandated in the 4R75E transmission. |
| 2009–2010 | No major changes. Retail lineup simplified to Signature Limited (SWB) and Signature L (LWB). Flex fuel capability not added to the Town Car (unlike the Crown Victoria, which went flex fuel in 2008 — the Town Car stayed gasoline-only throughout). Production volume declining significantly as fleet and livery buyers transition to Lincoln MKT planning. |
| 2011 | Final year of production. Signature Limited and Signature L for retail; Executive and Executive L for fleet. Final Town Car rolled off St. Thomas Assembly in August 2011. Minor cosmetic updates to hood, fenders, and quarter panels for the final year. The Signature L was purchased in just over 1,000 units for 2011. Production ended without public announcement from Ford. Lincoln MKT Town Car became the fleet replacement for livery use. |
How to Identify Your Trim Level
The fastest method is the door jamb label (Vehicle Certification label) on the driver's door edge. The interior trim code on that label tells you the exact configuration. The steering wheel is the fastest visual shortcut from the community: a plain steering wheel with no wood trim = base trim for that year. A wood-and-leather wheel with integrated controls = Signature Limited or higher. The wheelbase itself is immediately apparent from the exterior — the extended rear door on an L model is distinctively longer and has the wide fixed opera window.
| Identification Method | What to Look For |
|---|---|
| Door jamb label (VC label) | Interior trim code field identifies the specific configuration. Cross-reference against the factory build guide for your model year. The spring code field also confirms SWB vs. LWB. |
| Steering wheel | Plain wheel = Executive or base Signature. Wood-and-leather with integrated audio/climate buttons = Signature Limited or higher. Quickest visual ID from the driver's seat. |
| Rear door length and opera window | LWB is immediately obvious — the rear door is substantially longer and has a wide fixed opera window (triangular or extended shape depending on year) behind the main glass. SWB has a standard-length rear door. |
| Heated seat buttons | Heated front seat switches present = Signature Limited or higher. Absent = Executive or base Signature. |
| Power trunk behavior | Full-power trunk (opens AND closes on button press) = Signature Limited. Partial power or manual = lower trim. The power trunk motor is a Signature Limited-specific feature. |
| Audio system | If the head unit says "Audiophile" and the system has a subwoofer visible in the rear parcel shelf = Signature Limited. Standard system with no subwoofer = base trim. |
| Rear passenger controls | Dedicated rear climate and audio controls in the rear door panels or rear armrest = Signature L (LWB). Absent on all SWB models regardless of trim. |
Mechanical Specs — All Trim Levels (Shared)
All 2003–2011 Lincoln Town Cars share the same powertrain and suspension regardless of trim level. The differences between trims are entirely interior equipment, options availability, and wheelbase. The mechanical platform below applies to every configuration.
| Specification | Value — All 2003–2011 Town Cars |
|---|---|
| Engine | 4.6L SOHC 2V Romeo V8 — same family as Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis |
| Horsepower (2003–2004) | 239 hp @ 4,900 rpm — dual exhaust standard on all Town Cars from 2003 |
| Horsepower (2005–2011) | 239 hp @ 4,900 rpm — ETC introduced in 2005 but power output unchanged |

| Driveshaft | Steel — not the aluminum unit used on P71 and Marauder |
LWB Fuse Differences — Circuits Present Only on Signature L / Executive L
The extended-wheelbase Town Car has additional rear-cabin circuits that do not exist on standard-wheelbase models. These appear as populated fuse positions in the BJB on LWB vehicles but are absent on SWB cars. If you're working on a Signature L or Executive L and see fuse positions that don't appear in a standard Crown Victoria or Town Car diagram, these are the LWB-specific circuits.
| Fuse / Position | Circuit | Present On |
|---|---|---|
| #6 (2003–2004 BJB) | Right rear power point — rear passenger cabin power outlet | LWB only (Cartier L / Ultimate L / Signature L / Executive L) |
| #12 (2003–2004 BJB) | Left rear power point — rear passenger cabin power outlet | LWB only |
| #14 (2003–2004 BJB) | Rear door cigar lighters | LWB only |
| #111 (2005+ BJB) | Rear power point #1 — left | LWB only (Signature L / Executive L) |
| #113 (2005+ BJB) | Rear power point #2 — right | LWB only |
| #115 (2005+ BJB) | Rear cigar lighters | LWB only |
| #117 (2009–2011 BJB) | Rear cigar lighter (revised position) | LWB only |
PCM Differences — Town Car vs. Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis
The Town Car PCM connector pinout differs from the Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis at two specific positions. These are documented in the Lincoln PCM data sheets (LPCMData) maintained on this site and are important to know before cross-referencing any Panther platform wiring diagram across models.
| PCM Pin | Crown Victoria / Grand Marquis vs. Town Car |
|---|---|
| C175T Pin 21 | Crown Victoria / Grand Marquis: Engine vacuum signal. Town Car (2005+): ETC warning indicator control. Same pin position, different function — do not interchange diagnostic procedures without verifying the model. |
| C175B Pin 8 | Crown Victoria / Grand Marquis: Brake pedal position switch (BPP). Town Car: Not used — pin is present but has no assigned circuit. A BPP fault on a Crown Victoria has no Town Car equivalent at this pin. |
